2012 Atlantic Coast Tour, Mosaic Workshops with Yulia Hanansen by Location:

New York City:

Flowers and More Workshop: show the character, show the beauty! Unicorn Art Studio EXCLUSIVE: double reverse technique method will be used.
Saturday-Sunday, May 19-20, 9am-4pm, at Unicorn Art Studio.

Description: Flowers represent an exquisite beauty that has been depicted in many art media. Create your own interpretation of your favorite flower in this 2 day flower workshop. This workshop is typically taught in a direct method, but at Unicorn Art Studio we will do something different and exciting- double reverse method. Depending on your personal mosaic experience, you will have a choice of working in a traditional mosaic andamento or trying an exciting and visually effective "brush-stroke" technique that Yulia uses to create her flower portraits. Both, materials and techniques will be discussed in depth. Participants of the workshop are required to have a sketch, drawing, or a photo of the mosaic idea, and a notebook to take notes.
Tuition: $360, plus $40 for materials (or bring your own). Tools are provided.

Mosaic Landscapes: translating the beauty of nature into a mosaic medium

Description
: Create an everlasting impression of an unforgettable landscape. May it be a depiction of the tranquil seas at the sunset, a tropical lusciousness of blues and greens, or a snapshot of a turbulent wind, turn this image into a dramatic mosaic masterpiece. This workshop is designed for those with some experience in mosaic making. Both, materials and techniques will be discussed in depth. Participants of the workshop are required to bring in a sketch, drawing, or a photo of the mosaic idea, and a notebook to take notes.

Flower Mosaics with Visiting Artist Yulia Hanansen. At Ciel Gallery Studio.
When: April 21-22

Each flower is like a person, an individual with its own character, beauty and secrets. In this workshop you will learn to portray flowers as individuals. The images will be based on photos or realistic drawings and then translated into a language of mosaics. We'll explore the following: flower structure, closeups, depth of field, choosing a color palette, effectively portraying flower details, composition, layout, and technical aspects of working with stained glass. Boat-shaped “brushstroke” tesserae will be used for this project. Images will be provided or you may bring your own upon approval of the instructor.

Mosaic Weekend Workshop with Yulia Hanansen. At Cooperstown Art Association.

This highly informative hands-on workshop is for beginner students. You will learn how to plan out your mosaic masterpiece from start to finish. This includes design specifics, cutting and nipping tiles and glass, mosaic layout styles, and proper gluing instructions. Grouting demo will be given at the end of the workshop. You will have a choice between a mirror or a wall piece, enough glass colors to choose from, and professional tools to work with. Learn how to translate the ancient technique of mosaic into a modern colorful expression in this two-day hands-on workshop for beginners. You will learn how to plan out your mosaic masterpiece from start to finish, including design specifics, cutting tiles and glass, mosaic layout styles, and proper gluing instructions. Mosaic Portraiture Workshop with Yulia Hanansen
When: 2 days, Sat-Sun, October 13-14, 9am-5pm, at Unicorn Art Studio.
What: Learn the principles of drawing out a face, portraiture andamento (layout flow), precision cutting. Portrait shading, tone, and color choices will be extensively discussed during this class. We will pay special attention to the details such as eyes, expression, nose, lips, ears, hair. You will have a choice of working with either stained glass tiles or smalti. Students will choose in advance a portrait to work from. Make a copy of a classical artwork, or follow a photograph. All levels welcome. Absolute beginners are required to take 4 class sessions at Unicorn Art Studio prior to attending this workshop to learn the basic mosaic skills.
Tuition: $450, this includes tuition, materials, and exclusive handout booklet written by Yulia Hanansen for this workshop, (add extra $50 if working with smalti)

What: This workshop is designed for those with some experience in mosaic making. Bring a piece that you are working on or start a new one. Yulia will assist you with figuring out the best way to achieve a desired expression in your mosaic. We will do this by choosing right materials, andamento, colors, and by skillfully working with tesserae. Both, materials and techniques will be discussed in depth. Participants of the workshop are required to bring in a sketch, drawing, or a photo of the mosaic idea, and a notebook to take notes.
