Project
Proposals : University
of Mississippi, Ole MisS
Project
Description
Taking into consideration the theme of the memorial and delicate planning
of the oval space between the Library and Lyceum, and preserving some
of the space for university gatherings, we propose the following solution
to the project:
To
emphasize the passageway that cuts across the oval connecting the Library
and Lyceum, we will widen it and will place an artwork on both sides
of the passageway. Two curves will run parallel to each other preserving
a passage in-between. The shape of the curves and passageway enclosed
between them will signify a stream of time. The curves will form free
standing walls bearing mosaic artwork. The height of the walls will
increase from 0 at the ends up to 2-5 ft wave-like variations
towards the center.
Mosaics
on the walls will represent two different time periods. One wall will
be dedicated to the struggle for equality of education and the civil rights
movement of the 1960s. The main message for this part of the project will
be Separate Cannot be Equal. As a part of composition, we
are planning on picturing individuals who fought for the equality of rights
in Mississippi. The second part of the project will be dedicated to the
present and the future. The panel will show the achievements that have
been accomplished as the result of the struggle for civil rights.
